Throughout my two years in ceramics, I have continued to discover new
techniques, mainly adding to a complex glaze or complex shape. My work has led
me to many different discoveries, enhancing my projects as well as by adding to
my abilities as a ceramisist.
The projects are for the most part small with either a simple or complex glaze, depending on if the shape is simple or complex itself. The emphasis on one element allows the on looker to focus on one particular part of the project. (If the shape is complex, the glaze is simple). Each project was made on the wheel. I would only sometimes have a set thought of what I wanted to create; on most occasions I would simply begin to throw and see what then comes of it. This has allowed me to be more creative and allow myself to "go with the flow". I found it easier to not go in to ceramics with a set shape in mind, usually, because it is very easy to get my hopes up about wanting to make a project and if I am not able to make what I had in mind, I would be dissatisfied. Once I got my shape made, I began the glazing process making sure to take into account the complexity of the form itself to determine whether or not I wanted a simple or complex glaze. I enjoy staining projects and then using simple light colors such as clear or celedon to cover the entire work. I continue to change the way I glaze as I discover new glazes, shapes, and techniques.
M y break through project this semester was my large pitcher. I made a large pitcher with a pulled handle and then pulled clay to make flowers, carved in to make vines, and painted (stained) on leaves. This project used, flat, 2D, and 3D figures.
They beauty of art is discovery of new and innovating ideas that can challenge the mind to a new self discovery. I have discovered what works and what does not and will continue to do so so that I may better improve my art.
