Throughout this first semester of advanced ceramics, I have constantly failed. But throughout all the failure, I have had some success. My on and off success led me to my overall theme, discovery. I have, and am continuing to discover, techniques that work and that do not so that I may become a better artist. In order to advance my skills, it is necessary that I keep up my effort and do not give up.
Although i am not happy with all of my projects, I realize that they show my progress in ceramics. The projects are for the most part small to medium sized with either a simple or complex glaze, depending on if the shape is simple or complex itself. For instance, my newest choice vase is small and simple so I paired it with a more complex glaze, using a solid color as the base and then dripping with another color so that the two start to blend but so that there is still a distinction between the colors. Another example is by two plates. For glazing them, I dipped different sides different colors because it was a simple form.
Each project was made on the wheel and then as I started to work, I discovered what my shape in the end would turn out to be. I found it easier to not go into ceramics with a set shape in mind, but to have an idea and just go with it and discover what comes up. I would start by using bagged clay, usually, and then begin to center, pull up, and work with the clay to decide how thick it should be. I would change the shape constantly so that I was happy with the outcome for the most part. As I went into the glazing process, with each project i took time to decipher what I wanted to test, and then if I found a glazing process I liked, I would then experiment with it. I found i like the blending process, with drips along the pot, but i found i liked it better if the glazes mixed instead of just looking like drips. I also discovered that I do not usually like how the -dipping one side in one color and then dipping another side in another color- turned out. I still have not found a favorite way to glaze but i will keep trying and learning new processes until i discover what i like best and what is most appealing to the eye.
Each day in ceramics, I try to discover new ways of achieving my best. By using the techniques taught by ms H as well as others learned for other students, I am beginning to learn what works best and why it works well. I want to be the best I can be. By never giving up on my path to discovering good, I can discover greatness.
My having had so many downs this semester, I have had the chance to discover how I can improve my skills and find out what does not work for me. They beauty of art is discovery of new and innovating ideas that can challenge the mind to a new self discovery. i have discovered what works and what does not and i will continue to do so so i may better improve my art skills. I have tested different ideas, seen what i do and dont like, and will continue to grow as a ceramicist. :)
