Thesis: Throughout the course of the semester, I have continued to discover new techniques, mainly adding to a complex glaze or complex shape.
What are they? The projects are for the most part small with either a simple or complex glaze, depending on if the shape is simple or complex itself. The emphasis on one element allows the on looker to focus on one particular part of the project. EX. If the shape is complex, the glaze is simple.
My break through project this semester was my set of three cups. This was a project I had actually planned to make because I had seen a cup similar to these and wanted to replicate it. It took me a long time to be able to make the shape that I wanted. I ended up changing the way I made the cup each time; this is why each cup look a bit different. I first tried to make the shape the first day on the wheel when the clay was wet. When that did not work right I tried to make a simple cylinder but with a thick bottom and then the next day when it was ready to foot, I cut into it so that i got the shape I wanted. Being able to accomplish what I wanted was a big break through. I hope to make more of these cups and improve
How were they made? Each project was made on the whe. I would only sometimes have a set thought of what Iwanted to make; on most occurences I would simply begin to throw and later realize what I would be able to throw. This has allowed me to be more creative. I found it easier to not go in to ceramics with a set shape in mind, but to have an idea and just go with it and discover what comes up. As I went into the glazing process, I made sure to take into account the complexity of the form itself to determine whether or not I wanted a simple or complex glaze. I enjoy staining projects and then using simple, light colors such as clear or celedon. I continue to change the way I glaze as I discover new glazes, shapes, and techniques.
How it refers back to theme? They beauty of art is discovery of new and innovating ideas that can challenge the mind to a new self discovery. I have discovered what works and what does not and will continue to do so so that I may better improve my art.
