Throughout this first semester of ceramics, I have constantly failed and succeeded. This lead me to my overall theme, discovery. I have, and am continuing to discover, techniques that work and that do not so that i may become a better artist.
The projects are for the most part small to medium sized with either a simple or complex glaze, depending on if the shape is simple or complex itself. For instance, my newest choice vase is small and simple so I paired it with a more complex glaze, using a solid color as the base and then dripping with another color so that the two start to blend but so that there is still a distinction between the colors.
Each project was made on the wheel and then as i started to work, i discovered what my shape in the end would turn out to be. I found it easier to not go into ceramics with a set shape in mind, but to have an idea and just go with it and discover what comes up. I would start by using bagged clay, usually, and then begin to center, pull up, and work with the clay around how thick it should be and change the shape constantly so that i was happy with the outcome for the most part.
Each day in ceramics, I try to discover new ways of achieving my best. By using the techniques taught by ms H as well as others learned for other students, i am beginning to learn what works best and why it works well.
My having had so many downs this semester i have had the chance to discover how i can improve my skills and find out what does not work for me. They beauty of art is discovery of new and innovating ideas that can challenge the mind to a new self discovery.
